First Haircut

Last weekend was a lot of "firsts" for Rafael. Friday, he took his first few steps. Saturday was another, as we took him to his first haircut - probably the first rite of passage not only for a child but also for us parents. It sort of signals the beginning of the journey to parenthood. An uncertain yet exciting time. I was a bit anxious as I didn't know how he would react. I expected at least a mild resistance.

We came prepared. While the other parents had their digital cameras in hand, we had the video camera and the digital camera ready. This is only the first haircut. Imagine, what the first communion would be like :-)...We had to wait a while for his turn. Meanwhile, we took "before" photos of him (not that we don't have thousands of them already) with each of us (myself, Angel and Gra'ma). It was funny how he attentively watched the other kids before him who were having their hair cut. It was as if he knew, he was next. After about 15 minutes, it was finally his turn. We specifically chose one of the hairdressers - Vicky I think was her name, since she did a swell job with the kid before Rafael. I sat him down the space ship chair. Almost instantly, he grabbed on to the ship's steering and knew what to do with it. Vicky also gave her a comb to hold on to. I knew then that there wasn't going to be any problem. He occassionally moved his head but somehow Vicky, probably through experience, managed to avoid his ear. All in all, it was a success! Aptly, he received a certificate for his successful first haircut.

Below are photos from his first haircut:

Rafael's Certificate of Achievement for surviving the first haircut. We, parents, should've gotten one too - for surviving the anxiety attack.
